A Picnic at Hamilton Pool

Jack and I took a day trip to Hamilton Pool, near Austin Texas. Check out our picnic perfect menu!

Since Jack and I first moved to Austin, we’ve loved exploring all of the local natural springs and watering holes. The heat here in the summertime is no joke and the best way to beat it is by getting around some water. A few weeks ago, we took the day off and spent a lovely afternoon hiking and picnicking at Hamilton Pool. For this post, we’re partnering with Bota Box to share our little local adventure. Hamilton Pool is SO beautiful. It’s a natural pool with a gorgeous 50-foot waterfall. It’s about a 40 minute drive outside of Austin – an easy half-day trip. There’s a quarter mile hike…

Favorite Places in Austin to Eat & Drink

I get so many emails asking about my favorite places to eat and drink in Austin. It used to be pretty easy to make a list for people from out-of-town, but in the past couple of years Austin has really become a top notch food city. The list of restaurants to hit is becoming endless, so today I’m narrowing it down to just a few of my favorites and when (and with whom) I would go. This post is in partnership with Square Cash – because their app is a super easy way to split the check between friends. Unlike other money exchanging…

Austin Food & Wine Festival 2015

Photos from the 2015 Austin Food and Wine Festival!

One of our favorite foodie events is without a doubt the Austin Food & Wine Fest. It’s a smoky grill-tastic weekend complete with big flavors on small plates… celebrity chefs cooking alongside local chefs… and, of course, bottomless glasses of wine. One highlight for us was watching Hugh Acheson’s demo (we just love watching him on Top Chef!)… Surrounded by a pretty meaty food & wine fest, he made fava bean & leek soup and an arugula salad with mint. He charmed the audience talking about the importance of cooking at home, eating seasonally and using good ingredients. He says “life’s too short for crappy olive…

Moonshine Sweet Tea giveaway

Today we’re giving away a sweet little taste of Texas: Moonshine Sweet Tea. There are so many budding local food companies here in Austin… good people that are making great things with the best of the best ingredients. So when the folks at Moonshine Sweet Tea approached me, I was over the moon (bad pun, sorry), because this is exactly the kind of business I am excited to support… Family owned: check, locally made: check, good typography: check check. The recipe has been passed down for 4 generations. It’s handmade in small batches using real organic tea leaves. The sweet…

Austin Restaurants: Kome

We're at Kome in Austin, a casual Japanese place that we enjoy when we don't want to drop $200 on sushi, but want good cooked Japanese food.

We’ve been eating out a lot more lately. I won’t mention any names, but someone dropped the camera earlier this month so we were forced to take a little break from our regular photo schedule. It’s been fixed for weeks now, but we haven’t entirely kicked the restaurant habit. Last weekend we were at Kome, a casual Japanese place that we enjoy when we’re not in the mood to drop two hundred dollars on sushi (hi, Uchiko). But then again we don’t really come here for the sushi as much as their cooked food. I especially love the Grilled Tofu…

Dai Due Supper Club

Jeanine shares her experience with the ultra-locally-sourced Dai Due Supper Club in Austin, Texas. Here's to good food and community!

Jack and I have been going to the Dai Due dinners (prounced die do-aay) for a few years now, and it’s something we really look forward to. I usually try to snag tickets once a year in the summertime for one of the seafood-themed dinners. (There are some obvious themes I can’t go to as a non-meat-eater — ie. “The Whole Hog” dinner). The husband and wife team, Jesse Griffiths and Tamara Mayfield, take “local” to a crazy-person level (the good kind of crazy). While they set the dinner themes ahead of time, individual menu items aren’t decided until the last minute due to…
