Blame it on the heat, but I’ve finally become a smoothie breakfast person. I’ve always been more of a breakfast taco or avocado-toast-in-the-morning kind of person, but lately I’ve been waking up craving something a little more light and refreshing. Enter: this super green kale smoothie! It’s great for a light breakfast, but we also love it as an energizing mid-day snack.

How to Make The Best Kale Smoothie

The trick to making a good green smoothie is to balance the flavors so that there’s something green, something (naturally) sweet, and something creamy. In this smoothie recipe, I balance the kale’s green power with sweet ripe peaches, and I use frozen banana for creaminess. A little bit of ginger peps the whole thing up.

If you want to make this healthy smoothie in the winter, ripe pears would work well in place of the peaches. And if you don’t have bananas on hand, a quarter avocado will make this lusciously thick & creamy.

How to make a kale smoothie

To make this vibrant green smoothie even more green, I add a scoop of matcha. Matcha (to me) is as good of a pick-me-up as coffee, which makes this my personal favorite breakfast smoothie. Unlike steeped tea, matcha is made by grinding the entire tea leaf into a fine powder. Because you consume the whole leaf, it has approximately 10x more nutrients than regular green tea. Ingredients
  • 1 banana (freeze it in advance if you can remember)
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 teaspoons Aiya Cooking Grade Matcha
  • 2 leaves of kale, stems removed
  • 1-2 ripe peaches (or pears)
  • ½ teaspoon grated ginger
  • Handful of ice
Instructions
  1. In a high-speed blender, combine all ingredients. Blend until smooth.
Notes
Banana-free option: Replace the banana with ¼ cup raw soaked (then drained) cashews and extra almond milk.

    This smoothie recipe looks incredible. I’m obsessed with peaches right now. Can you use a drinking quality of matcha or is it best to stick with the stronger flavor of the cooking grade?

      I like the cooking grade when mixing with other ingredients – the delicate flavor of (more expensive) ceremonial matcha can get lost. With the cooking grade – you can actually taste it. Although, Aiya’s is still nicely mellow and not too strong or bitter.

    this looks rad! my boss spent 80% of her time at her previous job in hong kong and she’s gotten me hooked on matcha lattes. soooo good and i’ve been wanting to try it with some other stuff. this looks like a good place to start.

      it’s so good – it’s slightly sweet and it tastes entirely different from regular green tea (we love matcha most in ice cream!)

    This looks so yummy & perfect for the heatwave here in London. I can only buy kale in bags in the store with the leaves already in small pieces. What is it equivalent to? A handful of kale???
