West Texas weekend

Last weekend, as the ACL music fest was getting underway and the traffic around our neighborhood was gridlocked, we bolted town for my friend Christie’s wedding. I’m totally crowd-phobic so in my mind she couldn’t have chosen a better weekend. Although, lets be real, I’m pretty camp-phobic too so this kind of getaway is out of the ordinary for us me. But it was such a fun, relaxing change of pace… it reminded me that we don’t always have to hop on a plane when we feel the itch to go somewhere.

My keys to the kitchen

I’m really excited (ok, totally flattered), to be on Aida Mollenkamp’s site today with a little interview sharing my keys to the kitchen. I always loved watching Aida on the Food Network, and I’m so excited to meet up with her this weekend while she’s in town for her Keys to the Kitchen book tour. She’s in Dallas and Houston today and tomorrow, but she has a really cool event happening in Austin this Sunday night at Hotel St. Cecelia. I think there are a few tickets left… if you live in Austin, you should come. Click here to go…

Our kitchen tour on the kitchn

I’m excited today to share this tour of our kitchen on The Kitchn! As this post goes live, we will be on a way-too-long flight home from Spain… longing to be back home. We’ve had a great trip, but I am excited to get back to my kitchen. After two weeks of eating ourselves silly, a good healthy detox will be in order… And when that’s done, I’ve got a notebook full of travel-inspired recipe ideas to try out. Click here to go over to The Kitchn to view the rest of the tour… tons more photos of us, our kitchen,…

Barcelona, a surprise trip

Travel photos from our trip to Barcelona.

I promise next week… back to the recipes. Today is the last day of our trip, and I just have one last while-traveling travel post… Last week, Jack and I celebrated our third anniversary in Amsterdam. At dinner, I surprised him with this little detour I had planned to Barcelona for the last leg of our trip. I love a good surprise … and Jack is so oblivious to everything, which makes these things incredibly easy to pull off. We have a special place in our hearts for Barcelona – we were here about four years ago (he proposed to…

Amsterdam Snapshots

Travel photos from our trip to Amsterdam!

We’re onto our next destination, but I wanted to share some quick snapshots of our few days in Amsterdam… (we had a little snaffoo with the Berlin photos, I’ll share those later). A whole bunch of readers mentioned Cafe Winkel for the best apple pie in Amsterdam… (thanks readers!) It was the perfect stop while walking around the city on a cold and rainy afternoon. And it did not disappoint – it’s not as pastry-ey as American apple pie… it was more of a cross between pie and cake. Which I loved because, well, I like cake. Two nights ago,…

In London: Nopi

We’re in Berlin now, about to head out to dinner… we’ve walked about a million miles, and it feels nice to sit down and rest for a few minutes. Here are some snaps from our first night in London at Nopi… Ottolenghi’s newest restaurant. A big thank you to all of the readers who left comments recommending it! Jack started with a bourbon sour (pictured above). I had wine, but if I had been a little less jetlagged, I would have gotten a cocktail called The Saffron Chase (gin, elderflower liquer, lemon juice, saffron syrup & champagne). I’m still kicking myself a little bit…

B-Y-O Airplane Food

I have to admit, I always used to enviously read Heidi’s posts about the food she would make and bring on long airplane trips and think, “really, how the heck does anyone have that kind of time before a big trip? She must really have it together…” My mom is going to read this post in disbelief because I promise you this kind of prepared-ness is so not me. Running for flights and just barely making them… is me. But in recent years, I’ve gotten a little bit better just because it’s no fun traveling for 20 or so hours…

Off to… London, Berlin & Amsterdam

We’re leaving next Wednesday and I would love love love your suggestions and recommendations if you live in or have traveled to one of these cities… Restaurants, markets, cafes, shops, galleries… some “not-to-miss” sights… some that are off the beaten path and a little less touristy. We’re also open to meeting up with some fellow bloggers if time allows. I’ve been to London a few times before and I’m excited to go back for more curry, and of course a stop at one of the Ottolenghi restaurants. Amsterdam & Berlin… I’m not so sure what to expect (especially for veggie food…

Summer Veggies

A collection of healthy recipes starring summer produce from food bloggers around the web.

I just realized this weekend is Labor Day weekend (a fun surprise)… so happy long weekend everyone! I feel this summer is abruptly ending. In less than 2 weeks we’ll be traveling to places much colder than it is here, and by the time we get back it’ll be almost October. I’m actually really looking forward to pumpkin bread season, but for now, I’m still savoring the summer and trying to cram in some last minute late-season recipes. Here are a few I’ve had pinned that look especially delicious: Vegan tomato bisque with grilled corn and pasilla peppers from 10th…

Austin Restaurants: Kome

We're at Kome in Austin, a casual Japanese place that we enjoy when we don't want to drop $200 on sushi, but want good cooked Japanese food.

We’ve been eating out a lot more lately. I won’t mention any names, but someone dropped the camera earlier this month so we were forced to take a little break from our regular photo schedule. It’s been fixed for weeks now, but we haven’t entirely kicked the restaurant habit. Last weekend we were at Kome, a casual Japanese place that we enjoy when we’re not in the mood to drop two hundred dollars on sushi (hi, Uchiko). But then again we don’t really come here for the sushi as much as their cooked food. I especially love the Grilled Tofu…

Sweet Home Chicago

Highlights from Jeanine and Jack's trip to Chicago...including their favorite restaurant stops. Did someone say vegan peanut butter cookie dough milkshake?

Having grown up here, it feels weird to categorize this as a “vacation.” Yet we don’t make it back very often and when we do, so much has changed. This trip was part business trip, part visiting family, and part mini-getaway. This is by no means a comprehensive list or a city guide, just some highlights of what we did and where we went this time. follow the jump to continue reading (and disregard that it says “recipe”):

Hello, we're Jeanine and Jack.

We love to eat, travel, cook, and eat some more! We create & photograph vegetarian recipes from our home in Chicago, while our shiba pups eat the kale stems that fall on the kitchen floor.
