Cinnamon Apple Tart Cherry Crumble

This easy apple crumble takes half the effort of pie, but it's just as good, full of warming cinnamon & cardamom as well as brown sugar, oats & nuts.

Pie is something I enjoy most when other people make it. I usually don’t have the patience to make crust, but that’s probably because I’m more of a filling person anyway. (When I was a kid, I’d always eat the pumpkin pie filling and leave the shell of the crust behind.) So, naturally, crisps and crumbles are my fall desserts of choice. This apple crumble recipe is much easier than pie, but it still has all of apple pie’s fruity-crunchy-fall-spiced goodness. How to Make Apple Crumble I made this nutty, oat-y crumble topping with a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, and cardamom. Cardamom has…

Vegan Chocolate PB&J Cups

Ever think “I’d like to combine my favorite school lunch with my favorite halloween candy?” Well neither had I – until Jeanine (this is Jack, by the way) came up with this crazy and amazing snack idea. And she even put some salt on top, just to cement it as the best peanut-butter cup idea ever. I’m sorry that this post is a bit light on the photos – I kind of… ate… the subjects before we could take more follow up shots. Sorry about that. Just make your own – you won’t regret it. These are also vegan and gluten…

How to Make Frozen Yogurt

Learn how to make frozen yogurt with this easy frozen yogurt recipe! Luscious, rich & creamy, it beats soft-serve froyo any day.

We’ve made a lot of ice creams before, so I don’t know why it’s taken us this long to think of making a frozen yogurt recipe with actual yogurt! Guess what? It tastes nothing like the soft-serve froyo you get from frozen yogurt shops. It’s creamy, luscious, and rich, made with Greek yogurt, a bit of coconut cream, a little sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla. The yogurt gives it a tangy flavor (a little like cheesecake), and it has a bright pop from the tart cherries that are marbled throughout. We’re kind of obsessed. How to Make Frozen Yogurt To make this frozen…

Wine-ey Peaches & Cream

… otherwise known as: peaches leftover from the bottom of your sangria pitcher. With ice cream. And a pinch of cinnamon if you want to get fancy. This weekend might have been my laziest summer weekend yet. Jack was out of town so I really kicked back. I ate some pretty interesting (yet amazing) watermelon sushi Friday night with a girlfriend… went for a long sweaty walk this morning… and then caught up on every episode of Food Network Star. I can’t say I’m on pins and needles about tonight’s finale because my favorite girl (Emma) got kicked off a few episodes back. I guess I’m…

Peach Crumble & Summery Links

Remember the peach and blackberry crumble from this dinner party? Click over to The Yellow Table for the recipe! Trust me, you’ve gotta make it before peach season is over. And here are some other summery recipes I’ve been drooling over lately… I’m not an expert pie-maker, but I think I could handle this Ginger Peach Galette. Sweet Corn, Peach and Cherry Salad – so seasonal! This Baked Feta with Tomatoes makes me want to take a trip to Greece. The prettiest Blueberry Cake I’ve ever seen. I’m loving this new-to-me blog The Clever Carrot and her Summer Crunch Salad. Because I can’t have enough peaches: Peach &…

Fancy S’mores

I ate a lot of s’mores as a kid. It all started at our family’s annual summer vacations to Kentucky Lake. Later, at home, my sister and I would make them regularly in the microwave. Authentic “camp” flavor doesn’t happen in the microwave, but it was fun to watch them rise and (nearly!) explode. It probably comes as no surprise that hershey bars and jet puffed marshmallows aren’t quite my thing anymore. So, last weekend, Jack and I headed to Whole Foods where we gathered ideas and ingredients to make these fancy pants gourmet s’mores. Most of our inspiration came…

Gluten-free Skillet Cookies

A lot of gluten free baking experiments happen around here. If you haven’t noticed them, it’s because a good many of those trials never become post-able recipes. I’ll say it (and I won’t be the first!) – gluten free baking is hard. I know many of you are pros, but for the rest of us, it can be frustrating and not to mention expensive. Today, I’m here to relieve you of all of your internet-flour purchasing by saying: just buy a pre-made flour blend. One bag, and you’re done. For years, all of my gluten free friends have sworn by…

Vanilla Peach Pops

There’s only one thing more summery than juicy, ripe peaches: Juicy, ripe peaches frozen into sweet, melty, almond milk popsicles! It’s summer on a stick, friends. First, you need to get your hands on some really good peaches. If you can’t find good peaches, use whatever juicy peak-season fruit you do have. (Sliced strawberries would be excellent here). For the base, whisk Vanilla Almond Breeze, with a touch of coconut oil and maple syrup. You could also use plain (sweetened) almond milk and add a bit of vanilla bean. (I’d stay away from vanilla extract this time). These are pretty…

Raspberry Polenta Cake

What do you make with leftover polenta and leftover raspberries? Cake, of course! But not just any cake – cake in a skillet. Because skillets = summer. Aside from the little bit of butter I used to grease the pan, this cake is vegan and made with coconut oil. It’s naturally sweetened with maple syrup and, of course, the sweetness that comes from the raspberries. (note: you can grease your pan with coconut oil). It’s a (smaller) version of this peach cake I made last summer – in my 10-inch skillet this cake is just 4 servings, but you can…

Peanut Butter Bourbon Milkshake

It might not be summer everywhere yet, but here in Texas, it’s hot. Lately our weekend afternoons have consisted of long sweaty walks followed by sweet frozen treats. This ice cream has been our treat-of-choice over the past few weeks – mainly because when you experiment with new recipes, you make a lot of versions. And thus, a lot of ice cream. It’s not a bad problem to have. This recipe is a 2-parter, you can stop at the ice cream, or go a step further and make it into a milkshake. Instead of our regular coconut base, we did…

Almond-ella Spread

Here's a delicious, healthy version of nutella made with almonds. It's vegan, dairy-free, gluten free, and only three ingredients!

Everyone loves nutella right? I love it as much as the next person, but I don’t love all of the unhealthy ingredients that are in it. This almond chocolate spread, (almond-ella is what I’m calling it), is just as creamy and delicious. It’s super easy and just 3 ingredients: almond butter, chocolate, and (the secret to it’s smooth texture), coconut oil. Melt everything together, pour it into a jar. It’ll firm up and set as it cools, (if you can wait that long). Slather it on toasted bread and top it with your favorite fruit. Many of you have asked me to recommend gluten…
