Today I’d (and this is Jack again, by the way) like to bring you another one of my favorite recipes for a hot summer day – a great, fruity smoothie. You see, Jeanine likes smoothies, but I really, really love berry smoothies. And I don’t need them for a workout, or to wake up, or any regimen – we’ll be walking down the street randomly, and I’ll just decide that it’s smoothie time. I have no smoothie shame.
Blueberry Smoothie Recipe Ingredients
This yummy blend starts with two of my smoothie favorites: blueberries and raspberries. The blueberries make up the majority of the smoothie’s sweet base, while the raspberries add just a little tang. I use frozen berries here to create an extra-refreshing cold drink.
Then, I add in a squeeze of lemon for extra brightness, almond milk to get the blender going, and almonds, cashews, or banana for creamy texture. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, I recommend the banana, but I really love how creamy the nuts make this drink, and they also add healthy fats & protein, which is great if you’re making this smoothie a meal.
I like to finish mine with some honey for sweetness, as well as a boost of AIYA’s Rooibos Tea. Similar to matcha, it’s powdered tea, so it doesn’t need to be steeped. This means that it is perfect for sprinkling into things like smoothies. The mild red tea adds a delicious depth to the flavor of the berries that you normally don’t get in a smoothie. Plus, because it’s made from the whole tea leaf, it has (around) 10x the health benefits and antioxidants of regular steeped tea.
Both the honey and the tea are totally optional, but they really perfect the flavor of this bright & healthy smoothie recipe.
Blueberry Smoothie Variations
If you’re new to making smoothies, you’ll learn pretty quickly that they’re some of the most flexible recipes out there, so feel free to customize this one to your heart’s content with your favorite fruits, protein powder, or superfood boosts! Here are just a few ideas to change it up:
- Use a tablespoon of nut butter in place of the almonds or cashews.
- Use a different berry blend. A combination of berries & cherries would be delicious, and strawberries would definitely be at home here.
- Add a handful of spinach. You won’t taste it, so why not get some extra green power in your morning drink?
- Use coconut milk instead of almond milk for an extra-rich drink.
- Add some basil! I love berries and basil – see here, here, and here – so I think its flavor would be perfect in this healthy blueberry smoothie.
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- ½ cup frozen raspberries
- ¼ cup blanched & peeled almonds, raw cashews or ½ frozen banana
- 1½ cups almond milk
- squeeze of lemon
- 1 tablespoon AIYA Rooibos Zen Cafe Blend, optional
- ½ tablespoon honey or maple syrup, optional
- Blend all ingredients together. Add more almond milk to thin the consistency, if necessary.
